How much does social media management cost?

Quotes for the same brief routinely differ by 4×. Almost always it is because the two agencies are pricing different work. Here is what sits inside a retainer, what each part costs, and how to compare two proposals honestly.

What you are actually buying

"Social media management" covers anything from scheduling someone else's photos to running the entire channel. Before comparing prices, establish which of these are included:

  • Strategy — channel plan, audience, content pillars, tone of voice
  • Design and copy — original artwork and captions, not stock with a logo
  • Production — shoots, editing, subtitles, vertical cutdowns
  • Community management — replies, direct messages, escalation
  • Paid amplification — boosting, targeting, creative testing
  • Reporting — what moved, what did not, what changes next

An agency quoting a third of everyone else has usually dropped production and community. Those are the two most expensive items, and the two that most affect results.

Typical price bands

Indian market rates for a monthly retainer, as of 2026:

TierMonthlyTypically includes
Scheduling only₹15,000–30,000You supply content; they publish and reply
Standard retainer₹40,000–90,00012–20 posts, 4–8 reels, design, copy, community, monthly report
Full service₹1,00,000–2,50,000The above plus a monthly shoot day, paid handling, influencer coordination
Multi-market₹2,50,000+Several brands or languages, dedicated team

Production is the swing factor. A retainer with a monthly shoot day costs meaningfully more than one working from your existing library — and after three months, the library-only option starts looking recycled.

What makes a quote go up

Video volume. Reels are the single most expensive item per piece. Filming, editing, subtitling and cutting to length is hours of work for thirty seconds of output.

Approval layers. Every extra approver adds revision rounds, and revisions are priced in whether or not anyone says so.

Response time commitments. A fifteen-minute median reply during working hours needs someone actually watching. That is a staffing cost, not a software one.

Number of channels. Adding a channel is rarely free — content genuinely has to be re-cut per platform if it is going to work.

What should not be in the price

Ad spend is not an agency fee. It should be billed at cost, visible in your own ad account, with the management fee quoted separately. If a proposal blends the two into one number, ask for the split.

The same applies to influencer fees, stock licensing and travel. All of these should be pass-through, agreed in advance.

Questions before you sign

  1. How many posts and reels per month, and what happens if a month runs short?
  2. Is content produced or repurposed? Is there a shoot day?
  3. What is the committed response time on comments and messages?
  4. Who owns the working files and raw footage when we part ways?
  5. Is ad spend separate from the fee, in our own account?
  6. What is the notice period?

The one that reveals most: ask what happens to the template system if you leave. If the answer is that it stays with the agency, you are renting your brand's look rather than building it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a monthly retainer better than paying per post?

For anything ongoing, yes. Per-post pricing pushes both sides toward volume rather than results, and it makes community management — which is continuous — impossible to price. Per-post works for one-off campaigns.

How long before social media shows results?

Reach and engagement usually move within 4–8 weeks. Enquiries and revenue attributable to social typically take one to two quarters, because the audience has to be built before it can be converted.

Should the agency have access to our ad account, or use theirs?

Yours, always. If the spend runs through the agency account you lose the audience data, the pixel history and the billing visibility when the relationship ends.
